Hairstyle Names From 1970s Ebony Ad
Here are some pictures of hairstyles with awesome names that I scanned from one of my 1970s Ebony magazines. These are from an ad for hair products, not from an article. All good haircuts should have an equally good name.

February 6th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
Man, do I miss the 70’s.
The cars, the movies, the toys, the hair… and the women.
February 6th, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Hmmm… is it just me or do they all look the same?
February 6th, 2007 at 7:48 pm
They only look the same cause you’re a racist!
February 6th, 2007 at 7:50 pm
There are subtle differences that the trained hairstyle enthusiast will note right away. The ‘Fro and The Sportsman are however very similar.
Don’t forget that the facial hair configurations play into the complete ‘look’.

It’s just awesome how they all built up to Richard Roundtree on the bottom as “The Private Eye”! I guess it would have been too complicated to ask your barber for “The Black Private Dick That’s A Sex Machine With All The Chicks.”

@ Broomcup and oh man: Hello? Someone isn’t skilled enough to see the differences of thirty years old afroamerican hairstyles and that makes him a racist?
Come on! That’s bullshit. Let me guess, just because I can’t distinguis the songs of two rappers from each other I’m a racist, too, right?
Wrong. I just don’t like rap music.
But the hairstyles are cool.

February 7th, 2007 at 5:06 am
Broomcup, how stupid can one single being be? Calling someone a racist because not being able to distinguish similar looking haircuts? Was he taking about the looks of the people or their hair?
You are getting 10 out out of 10 points on the “dumb ass scale” for being biased and for sure not without prejudice.
In my opinion someone prematurely acusing another one being a racist by false observations and interpretations is worse than a racist.
February 7th, 2007 at 5:15 am
So what’s the deal. They couldn’t cut in straight lines back in the seventies? Was the shape up invented in the eighties? I don’t know how they cut a perfect sphere of hair and then fuck up the lines.
February 7th, 2007 at 5:22 am
I love “the executive” the most!
February 7th, 2007 at 5:26 am
I like how “The Duke” appears to have a lazy eye.
The ‘fro appears to have pointy area at the back of the do, but I think that is because the man has a pointier head than the Sportsman.

I think one guy was making the obvious joke, and then the other guy made the obvious follow-up joke, and then guy #1 got all bent out of shape and sometimes the internet is so stupid, but mostly, MOSTLY, in the comments section.
Those photos are rad, however.
February 7th, 2007 at 7:46 am
OK, OK, I think all the racism-related comments are overblown. It seemed to me that XuYu was indeed talking about the haristyles (not the people), many of which (the hairstyles of course) do look remarkably similar, which I think is part of the humor to be found in this old 70s hairstyle advertisement. It also seemed to me that Broomcup was making a joke, being fecetious or whatever. I thought it was funny Broomcup. Jeez people.
February 7th, 2007 at 9:01 am
its funny how ‘the flattop’ of the 70’s is so radically different from the flattop of the late 80’s. i hope the flattop comes back in the 21st century in a new and exciting variant.
February 7th, 2007 at 9:29 am
I think phil is right- I think Broomcup was being sarcastic with that initial comment and hasn’t come back to the forum to defend his sarcasm.

Pantera, qué afro, acá en Soldati llega a aparecer un puto de estos y lo embocamo entre todos, qué son, basquebolista?
February 7th, 2007 at 10:31 am
Well, I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who thought the majority look like the same damn overgrown haircut. Subtle differences?!?! I wouldn’t assume that is the haircut, I would just assume it is the head shape and grooming of the individual. The Professional looks like The Duke. The Prince looks like The Executive and The Jetsetter. The Flattop looks like a messier version of the same thing (and is not flat, btw). The Suave is the same thing with long sideburns. The Blowup is a Fro but a little bigger or just more picked out??? The Sportsman looks exactly like a Fro but the dude grooms it better. The Natural somehow looks like a white guy. The Perfecto is obviously quite different due to the part-shave. The Private Eye is also more unique in that it is the shortest one there. So, most of them do like quite a bit similar and they all look ridiculous (just my opinion). Much prefer close-cut or shaved head look.

I can tell the minor differences, but the major difference I’m noticing with the “new natural” style seems to be that it appears to be worn by an Indian guy. He doesn’t really seem to fit in.

My opinion is that the hair afficionados notice and appreciate the differences; the ones who don’t, don’t. What’s wrong with that? I happen to prefer hair, and well managed hair at that. . . so I notice. It’s retarded that the discussion even started. There’s ongoing oppression, slavery, poverty, etc. . . .and mutha*bleeps* are seriously having a ‘debate’ about hairstyles? C’mon y’all.

Maybe if you spend long enough then you will realise that the men are different shades, have different faces. Also someone else said all black people look the same, you ignorant loser.
