In the 1980s, entrepreneurial individuals travelled around the African nation of Ghana showing films on their own portable projectors. Hand painted movie posters were created to advertise which film was showing and the resulting pieces were often fantastic and original. Here is a site with some posters and here is another with a flash gallery of more posters. There was a book published on this subject but it seems to be out of print judging by the very high price it is fetching on Amazon.
