In the 1980s, entrepreneurial individuals travelled around the African nation of Ghana showing films on their own portable projectors. Hand painted movie posters were created to advertise which film was showing and the resulting pieces were often fantastic and original. Here is a site with some posters and here is another with a flash gallery of more posters. There was a book published on this subject but it seems to be out of print judging by the very high price it is fetching on Amazon.

Gotou Hidekado wrote to share his paintings and blog which are located here. According to this previous post over on the awesome Monster Brains blog, he was a rapper since the 1990s who decided to start drawing in 2003. Monster Brains also links to an additional gallery here.
EDIT: Gotou wrote to say that though he did create music, it was not rap. But he does not mind because it is in the past.

Over at the Hanuka Brothers’ excellent blog Tropical Toxic there is a new post featuring art from an upcoming Meathaus project to be released this summer, and premiering at the San Diego Comicon. Don’t forget to order the current and latest volume of Meathaus! It is available to buy here direct from us or over at Amazon.com.
Whether you are in business for yourself freelancing or still in school considering one day running your own illustration or design firm, it is never too late to get smart about the business side of it all. We have been posting articles and resources that relate to this under the “Business for Artists” category that you see at the bottom of this post in case you want to see what else we have found over the last year or so.
Here are a few more helpful resources, found through a morning of following links that all started out on this excellent post from Amid Amidi over on Cartoon Brew about business practices that you should be aware of and avoid at all costs. The most valuable assets that you own are your own ideas, so be very careful about ever signing them away– if ever at all.
First of all, NO!SPEC is an organization created to help both employers and service providers understand the negative effects of doing work for free, or “on speculation” that future work will be compensated.
And secondly, Creative Business is a company that provides many business articles for sale which may be useful. But one very valuable resource they are providing for free is this page of free downloadable forms, letters and contracts that you may use in your own business practice. At the least they provide a perspective on how a larger creative firm may operate and give you a standard of professional business practices to strive for.

Frank Zappa’s right-hand-stop-motion-animation-man for years, Bruce Bickford also has decades more complex and original stop-motion animation in the can. Bright Eye Pictures has created a feature documentary on the man and the film website has info and pictures about Bruce. Also Bruce has his own website with more. Also here is an interview from NPR’s website.

Here’s an ad that was in the Annie Awards program last night for the new iteration of Cartoon Brew and soon-to-be-launched Cartoon Brew Films dot com. Check out Amid and Jerry’s sweet new web façade at cartoonbrew.com and let ‘em know what you think of it. I think the whole package looks great, and since they are running on the unbeatable WordPress now, they can relax knowing that they made the best choice in free, powerful, open-source blogging software.

Encyclopedia Pictura created an unforgettable video “Knife” by the band Grizzly Bear and here it is in all of its 60MB+ glory. Encyclopedia Pictura appears to be a new video outfit with about five samples on their website but they are all impressive and fun to watch. Here is a page with behind the scenes photos of the production.

Found via videos.antville.org which is a great place to find videos. Weird crowd on the comments though, some people came down hard on this video even though I see it as one of the most exciting that I’ve found on there in a while.

Get into the SEKSUVISION video blog of Kevin Lee and his band Seksu Roba showcasing rare video finds of animation and more. Especially get into the adult animation of Vince Collins such as this piece, Malice In Wonderland. This short is fantastic! Get to know Vince Collins some more on his myspace page.
This is an outstanding project: Gary Jarvis from Greenpoint is running every street in Brooklyn, taking pictures along the way and reporting his progress on his blog. He’s not just taking blurry snapshots either. Gary is taking well observed, wonderfully composed photos of the unique and wild things that he sees. For example, Broken Angel:

And look at this almost abstract composition:

Every city hides loads of cool spots in under travelled and overlooked places, and many people never venture out of their own neighborhoods to find them. There is a chance Gary will. His complete Flickr photo collection is here, 656 photos and counting. (Via Gowanus Lounge.)
