James is doing a series of portraits of Los Angeles actors, musicians and such for a fashion-centric show in West Hollywood that will be up for a few days with an opening on Friday, September 10th. Check the details here.
I’m really bad at knowing actors’ names and likenesses, but the above piece is apparently Selma Blair, and after a quick image search it is obvious James nailed her likeness. My own celebrity sightings after living a combined ten years in New York and Los Angeles amount to about, 1) Ludacris waiting for a ride at LAX, 2) Hank Azaria eating eggs at the 101 Diner, and 3) Matt Groening pretty much every time I went into Meltdown Comics. Shows who I know about.
James also threw up some cell phone progress shots of what I can only assume is another portrait in the series. But that’s why I bring up my actor-recognition-deficiency: I don’t know who this is, do you?

Yuko Shimizu illustrates expertly in ink then often does a bunch of digital color steps to get to her finished piece. Her blog is great because she shows off a lot of process sketches and digital steps and my favorite part, the ink on paper. The black and white pieces on this post really struck me as spectacular because they seem closer to a state of analog immediacy, but who knows, there may have been multi-digi-layers of gray and texture. Not that it matters. Just excuse me working through some personal art issues here in public and go check Yuko’s nice work.
Yuko will be in a show with Tomer and Sam Weber at the Society of Illustrators opening Friday September 10th at 6:30pm.

Man you got to keep regular check-ins with What Things Do (previously mentioned here) or else you’ll miss serious new loads of comics. Great comics. Fortunately they stay there so you can read them in fits. Little features are being added like links to show you where you can buy copies of the actual comics. New artists are upcoming as well. Above is a bit of a story drawn by Ted May and written by Jeff Wilson. Learn more about the project on Inkstuds by listening to this conversation with Jordan Crane and Sammy Harkham.

Meathaus bros Brandon and Dash are included in Austin English’s 20 Questions With Cartoonists selection of interviews. Brandon’s page is here, Dash’s page is here. One notable thing is that all of the interviews feature a shot of the artist’s work space, such as Brandon’s comics station above.

Doug Gilford has a passion, and that is MAD Magazine. Doug Gilford’s Mad Cover Site has every issue’s cover scanned and cataloged for you to enjoy, including some alternate covers and back covers. My favorite page is the thumbnail page with every cover in one place so that you can search out favorites that you remember enjoying from your pubescent days.

“I hope this package finds you well and happy. This is a copy of my newest zine dealing with rituals, invocations, transformation, interconnectedness and the phases of the moon. It was published by Parking Block in Chicago and they can be found at parkingblockpublishing.com Enjoy!”
Thanks for the new zine Dennis, and yes I am well and happy. Dennis’ Flickr area is here and his website here.
