Encyclopedia Pictura

Encyclopedia Pictura

Encyclopedia Pictura re-blew my blown mind recently (previously here) when I read this in-depth profile over at Computerlove by Matthew Newton. It turns out that the three man collaborative is not just another creative outfit in a warehouse space in Brooklyn as I had assumed, but in fact they have been living on this future-science cooperative art-farm somewhere in California with fifteen other people, making augmented reality applications and DIY tractors in between video commissions and developing their first feature film, fittingly titled DIY. They are living my teenaged fantasy. Check out their work, Trout Gulch, and the E.P. @ Trout Gulch blog.

EDIT: And here is an NPR thing on them.

The Philadelphia Alternative Comic Con

The Philadelphia Alternative Comic Con was once again a good time. I don’t know if Meathaus did well or not moving books but I know I’m glad the Philly Cartoonist Society happened to be hanging out drinking Irish whiskey behind two tables caddy-corner to the bathroom passageway that I wedged our table into. I showed up last minute with four boxes and two suitcases of books. I took Celia‘s example from MoCCA 2011 and was doing back issue dollar deals on the earliest issues. We sold a handful of GFTG!4s, (which by the way are now up for REGULAR order as opposed to PREorder). For a lot of the day it appeared there was a low show attendance. I’m certain the attendance was cut down because it was pouring rain all day.

I was manning the Meathaus table solo, but like I said Jeffro, James, Sam and Christine were four feet away so I could take little breaks wandering far enough away to catch up with Pat Aulisio, Benjamin Marra, Jess Worby, Chris Pitzer, Peter Lazarski, Mike Turzanski, David Jablow, Josh Burggraf, Victor Kerlow and more decent people too. I wanted to look at Collective Stench‘s table because they had all these grisly drawings and fifty five people or something smashed behind their tables which was bringing me back to Meathaus ’01 and I wanted to look at a bunch more things on the other side of the room too but when I would turn around and see someone hovering near the Meathaus table an irrational thought pulled me back, “oh maybe they want to buy something” instead of “oh hey I should thoroughly comb this show and buy neat comics because this only happens once a year”. Still I managed a small PACC Load including stuff from the aforementioned names plus the Sisterly Love Blockparty crew from Space 1026 and Sydney and Travis Southard :

James Jean REBUS Launch

James Jean REBUS Launch and OVM Scarf

I’m certain that James Jean‘s new REBUS 256 page full color monograph is eyeball-delicious. I mean it is full of James’s work. And knowing James, I’m guessing that he probably designed it himself too. But James has more than that going on, he’s got this second scarf coming out from OVM. You buy the scarf, you get the book free, by the way. Not being in the market for scarves myself, I’ll just appreciate the imagery, including this promo image above featuring altered scarf art and some lady. Click over to James’s blog here for more on the scarf. Check out the event page for the book launch here, which is happening on August 28th at LACMA in LA.

Richard Short Comics

Richard Short Comics

Super news coming from Richard Short’s new blog, Nobrow, the publishing outfit behind Jesse Moynihan‘s recent Forming book will be putting out a new book of Richard’s Klaus comics this October. Richard was previously posted about here, he’s got a stash of art here, and of course his work is included in the new GO FOR THE GOLD! 4, which he mentions reading on the train here as some grade school kid tries to peer over his shoulder and see all the fantastic cartoon tits ‘n’ shits.

Alex Schubert Comics

Alex Schubert Comics

Alex Schubert draws and posts his comics like The Blobby Boys, parts of his zines and sketchbooks on his blog Zine Police, his previous shared blog Tiny Jams, his website here, and What Things Do. Also he has a comic over here on Radical Fortress.

Mikkel Sommer Art

Mikkel Sommer Art

Mikkel Sommer (previously posted about here), made a new drawing series for the new issue of GO FOR THE GOLD! 4, which is very generous and excellent of him, since I had only asked everyone for work that had already been completed previously. You need to click over to Mikkel’s blog post to see all of the drawings as they are intended to look since the printing in GFTG!4 reveals its weakness on drawings such as these with a lot of gray tones. Mikkel says the theme is dead people with funny heads. He blogs here and has a portfolio here.

Andrew Schick Drawings

Andrew Schick Drawings

Nice. Some time has passed since our last post and Andrew Schick has used it to draw a lot more intriguing ideas and posted them on his sketchblog and his Daily Claw.

GO FOR THE GOLD! 4 ARRIVES

Mark Sunshine Comics

GO FOR THE GOLD! 4 ARRIVES

Mark Sunshine, contributor to the new GO FOR THE GOLD! 4 receives a copy and records his initial impressions of it and then chills out on a car talking about the production of a new RIOTGOD track and the coming rainy weekend and the strangeness of life and then GO FOR THE GOLD! again. Check out Mark’s youtube channel for more video entires about monster dreams (with a diagram) and emotional puppy deliveries. I like watching these videos, it’s like a digital hang out session. Up top are a few of Mark’s drawings from his website collection.
