It’s relaxing to chill out and watch Jeff methodically ink some special work. Says Jeffro:
Upcoming Tom Waits Tribute Art Show at Atlantis, the Lost Bar–small group of artists. Tight theme, paying homage to one of my artistic heroes. I’ve done many drafts on the theme of this song over the years, but couldn’t get it right. I think I’m getting it this time–realizing that humpback whales usually breach the surface spinning upside down.
If the ink drawing turns out how I want it to, I will have a limited edition color print made for the show.
It was a good time, there was an ice cream flavor there from Little Baby’s made just for the show that was really crazy because it tasted like sweet creamy avocado and mostly green apples but it also was apparently made of kale, celery and some chunks that I didn’t understand but enjoyed. It was good to see and catch up with Farel, Jeffro, James Heimer, Pitzer, and Marra, Aulisio, Rugg, Lex and to meet Piskor, Mok, Box Brown, Bodie and Czap and more dudes and ladies who I’ve just known through this blog. I’ll try to post some of the books soon along with this large stack of letters from you comics friends from all over the world.
The show was also a success for Meathaus moving a load of books out of my place into your various arms at super discount deals. A bunch of those “Real Life Wizardz” posters and Lenny’s Summer Job zines I pushed on you as bonuses as well. Good time and good job by Locust Moon except the show was scheduled to run too late for my old ass and should be more like 10am or 11am to 5pm or 6pm or something in that range I’m thinking. Also I did feel bad for the four tables stuck back near the restroom. That shouldn’t really be a spot. But it looks like the show could use more space then. Next year keep the ice cream and bring on the hoagies this time and maybe some brews too. Oh yeah and bring back Farel again it was super to hang out just like olde thymes.
Everyone in the greater Philadelphia area should head over to Locust Moon to browse and buy books. They are fully stocked with a Meathaus stash now too.
Meathauser Jeffro has a shirt up for the 24-Hour sale on Teefury December 5, 2011. The design is inspired by Boardwalk Empire’s crazy Phantom of the Opera/Slingblade war hero character. You can see the design by Clicking HERE.
You can also see Jeffro’s work in the latest Meathaus Go For The Gold book. In the meantime, here are a few of his rarely seen sketchbook images dating from college to recent years, most done with just pen, no pencil:
The Philadelphia Alternative Comic Con was once again a good time. I don’t know if Meathaus did well or not moving books but I know I’m glad the Philly Cartoonist Society happened to be hanging out drinking Irish whiskey behind two tables caddy-corner to the bathroom passageway that I wedged our table into. I showed up last minute with four boxes and two suitcases of books. I took Celia‘s example from MoCCA 2011 and was doing back issue dollar deals on the earliest issues. We sold a handful of GFTG!4s, (which by the way are now up for REGULAR order as opposed to PREorder). For a lot of the day it appeared there was a low show attendance. I’m certain the attendance was cut down because it was pouring rain all day.
I was manning the Meathaus table solo, but like I said Jeffro, James, Sam and Christine were four feet away so I could take little breaks wandering far enough away to catch up with Pat Aulisio, Benjamin Marra, Jess Worby, Chris Pitzer, Peter Lazarski, Mike Turzanski, David Jablow, Josh Burggraf, Victor Kerlow and more decent people too. I wanted to look at Collective Stench‘s table because they had all these grisly drawings and fifty five people or something smashed behind their tables which was bringing me back to Meathaus ’01 and I wanted to look at a bunch more things on the other side of the room too but when I would turn around and see someone hovering near the Meathaus table an irrational thought pulled me back, “oh maybe they want to buy something” instead of “oh hey I should thoroughly comb this show and buy neat comics because this only happens once a year”. Still I managed a small PACC Load including stuff from the aforementioned names plus the Sisterly Love Blockparty crew from Space 1026 and Sydney and Travis Southard :
